How do I caption a video call or a video in my browser on a Mac?
Start listening in Live Transcript before the call or video, and it captions whatever your Mac plays, whichever app the sound comes from: a call in FaceTime or Zoom, or a video in your browser. Turn on the microphone as well and your side appears as “You”, so a call reads like a script: who said what, in order.
Live Transcript isn’t out yet: the download button on the home page starts working on release day.
During the call
Captions drop down from the notch while someone is speaking, or run in the floating glass panel, which you can pin above the call window. The other side is labelled Them and your microphone You.
Afterwards
The session is saved to History on your Mac with the app that was playing (by name only, with no window titles or web addresses), so you can find it later by asking for it, for example “the meeting in FaceTime last week”.
Export it as Markdown or plain text, as SRT or VTT subtitles with timings, or send it to Apple Notes with the recorded audio attached.
Summaries and action items
In a session’s Summary & Questions panel, ask for a summary (a short summary, key points and action items) or ask it a question, with the AI you choose in Settings › AI. With Apple’s on-device model nothing leaves your Mac; with a cloud provider, only the transcript text you ask about is sent, and only to that provider. Audio is never sent.
